True Story Tent commissioned me to create an artwork that was going to be used to promote and attract attendees to their Themed Story Night. The Theme for this event was Abuse. The subject matter is extremely taboo within the Middle Eastern Community as the people truly believe that abuse is something that does not exist amongst us. However, just like every other corner of the world abuse exits and it was time to “unveil” it.

January 2020

Deliverable: Stop Motion Animation

Function: Events Poster

Uses: Social Media Advertising, Instagram Poster

Theme: Abuse

Client requirements: Artist has creative freedom, as long as the theme was reflected in final artwork.

Medium: Video, Stop Motion, Charcoal and Pencil drawing.

There was something about this topic that needed to be expressed in movement. I didn’t want it to be a still image. This topic was already hidden behind a veil and it needed to be brought to light and so the action of pulling back the curtain seemed quite fitting. I started off with images I took of my sister pulling back some fabric and used the images as my reference to draw out each frame. I intentionally created the hand using sharp edges and pointy fingertips to refer back to the monster that is abuse hiding behind the curtain.

The original stop-motion was a 2 second video out of the 24 frames, and Abdullah who is also a filmmaker edited the clip to turn it into the 15 sec clip that was used as the poster announcing the event on Instagram.

Final Video Clip, edited by Abdullah Al Maawali
